Chris Field, a CSBF flight engineer with a good Texan-sized gun collection, asked us yesterday if we’d like to go shoot some of his guns. The answer, naturally, was yes. (Sorry Natalie, we couldn’t say no.)
So, at about 6:30 we headed to the shooting range close to the base. Chris had brought an AK-47, a shotgun, a 9mm semi-automtic pistol, and a Confederate Civil War replica black powder revolver. His wife Megan brought her .22 semi-automatic pistol.
- The AK-47 and shotgun in the back of Chris’ truck
- Megan’s .22 semi-automatic
- The black powder revolver
- The powder, funnel, wadding, and balls for he black powder revolver
- The 9mm pistol
- Mark shot first, with the AK-47
- Mark shooting the AK-47
- Elio loads another amgazine
- Chris helps Tony out with the 9mm
- Gawkers look from safely well-behind the shooters (Matt and I are further up to take pictures)
- Tony shooting. Tony is dangerous
- Tony put the gun down and Tristan takes over.
- Not surprisingly, Nick starts with the shotgun
- Just like squirrel hunting, back in Ohio
- The target, and a door to destroy
- Laura takes aim at the door
- “No, it won’t know you over. It’ll bruise you though.”
- Door after Laura: head shot
- Lorenzo’s turn to destroy the door
- The door after Lorenzo’s through with it
- Megan practices with her .22
- Even the .22 recoils a little (courtesy Matt)
- The balls for the black powder gun. They’re mean looking
- Chris measures out a portion of black powder
- Then he loads it into one barrel
- Then he presses the powder down with a level built into the gun
- And after loading a bullet, repeats the process another 5 times. It takes a while
- Matt got a great shot of me with the AK-47
- Elio’s war face. He’s a little too happy
- Elio shoots the AK. The AK is really loud and the barrel gets hot
- Han wasn’t there, but if he was, he would have shot first
- Matt takes his turn on the AK
- Damn, I’m out already
- Chris finally takes his turn
- Chris on the AK-47
- With the black powder gun loaded, he inserts the blasting caps. They are just like in a cap gun
- Lots of smoke from the black powder
- Mark shoots the only muzzle flash I caught. Matt’s camera has a rapid-fire mode so he got a few more
- Nick shoots the 9mm. Just after firing, it’s chambering a new round
- Nick and the 9mm, courtesy Matt (notice dirt cloud behind target)
- AK ammo. Chris buys packs of 1000 at a time
- Matt on the .22. It’s fun because it’s so easy
- Laura tries the .22 as well
- I test my accuracy with the .22 pistol (courtesy Matt)
- Matt’s awesome rapid-fire mode catches my casing
- Mark on the 9mm, casing in midair just after firing
- Nick needs more hands to change the magazine
- Nick takes a moment to pose
- Then he shows us his war face. I was scared
- Nick takes a few aimed shots with the AK
- Then enters full bad-ass mode (courtesy Matt)
- Lorenzo with the AK-47. (Like all cool muzzle flashes, courtesy Matt)
- Chis tries the black powder again. It’s a lot of fun
- Lorenzo gets convinced to try it too
- And Matt takes the final shot. (Courtesy Matt’s camera, though clearly he didn’t take the picture)
- I empty the last AK magazine from the hip, firing as fast as I can. So much fun
- My war face isn’t as good as Nick’s
- But Nick will still be my friend
- Chris is determined to wreck the door with some buck shot
- The bullet-ridden door at the end of the day
