Today was when we were originally scheduled to fly to the ice. But it is Labour Day, so we had a day off instead. A party of us decided to spend the day hiking in the hills around Christchurch.
- Train and logs in our starting point: the port of Lyttelton
- The hill starts with a street going up through town
- Street art. Good thing we didn’t have to pull wagons
- The Party: Juan, Nick, Adam, Stef, Annamarie, me
- Juan performs some strange Colombian rest ritual, on an interestingly decorated bench
- Yellow Flowers, Green Grass, Blue Sky
- As the climb progresses, the view starts to get scenic
- The destination: a cabin arrived at via gondola from the other side
- High pressure oil pipeline
- Nick is eager to explore the concrete mystery place
- “They Passed This Way.” I pose, Nick looks on dubiously
- Stef Jumping, courtesy Juan
- View from atop the ridge (panorama to come, if I ever stitch it together)
- Lyttelton, courtesy Juan
- Town from other side, who’s name I don’t know. Courtesy Juan
- Out first sheep encounter
- After staring at us for a while, the sheep decide they don’t want to be encountered any longer
- Juan Climbing
- Adam posing in front of the view
- Annamarie poses to commemorate her triumph over the mountain, and asthma
- Nick the Conqueror
- We approach our destination, climbing a bit further up the ridge
- Red Rock (encountered after gondola place, where Stef and Annamarie decided to call it a day)
- Landscaping. Nick ponders, Juan sketches
- We find a WWII anti-aircraft battery
- Adam storms the bunker
- Bunker
- From this side we can see the beach going on forever
- More sheep. Freshly shaved this time
- Foundations
- Water Break
- Road, Trees, Ocean
- The hill we descended after leaving the track. You might observe that it doesn’t look particularly good for descending. You’d be correct
- Sumner, where our hike ends and we have some beer by the beach before catching a bus back
