Yesterday we test-assembled Spider. Spider, in all its carbon-fiber-and-finely-crafted-joints glory, is the most beautiful gondola ever created—in my humble opinion. Sadly, finely-crafted has its limits and there are a few misfit pieces.
We were joined by Emma, Jamil, and Steffi: our new student, returning student, and guest photographer (visiting Juan).
- The bolting begins
- And the first bolts fit. Who’da thunk it?
- I arrive, just in time
- Closeup of an insert: eight bolt holes, and one breathing hole
- The first triangle fits together
- So far, so good
- Laura: solo action shot
- Spider’s awesomeness repels darkness
- The bottom rear joint starts to fill up
- The complete back section…
- …including the turtle joint, now with legs
- Juan likes aerial shots, apparently
- Natalie: solo action shot
- The first side triangle
- Emma: solo action shot
- Jamil: solo action shot
- Group action shot
- Steve: solo “action” shot. Yes, I do often look dazed and confused
- Self-portrait of Steffi
- The taskmasters supervise
- The structure is flipped upright. Marco comes to watch
- Oh no! We find the first piece that doesn’t fit
- We continue to assemble our now imperfect structure
- Juan: man-with-the-plan action shot
- We place finishing touches on the scoop
- The completed gondola was tantalizingly climbable
- We demonstrate its awesomeness by easily lifting and moving it. Lorenzo joins in
- Finally, we assemble the SIP cage
- Steffi: solo action shot
- Juan takes in inadvertent and well-deserved bow in front of his creation
Very cool guys!
Cool, first comment ever.
Apparently I’d set the site up to hold comments for moderation (or rather that was a default I never looked at), so forgive the long delay here. I have disabled that feature.
