My post for the 14th left the K1 closing process when the 14th ended. The closing process did not end, so here are all events that took place after midnight. After successful closing and pumpout overnight, the cryostat’s pulse tube was connected in the afternoon, and cooling started.
- The cables are taped up so that there’s a light-tight seal
- Colin does some cable wrangling
- The end result is cables fed through more superinsulation
- As part of this highly scientific process, glove boxes hold the lid up a bit
- Homemade 3✕100-pin hermetic connections
- Connection Testing
- Zak listens to the waveplate rotator. You can feel it kick
- Closed Cryostat, bare except for waveplate wires
- The MCE crate mounts directly to the cryostat
- On the pump, at last
- Chris does some leak checking
- Later, the cryostat is upright and the pulse tube is connected. Cooling begins
- MAPO has more people than chairs. Don makes use of a ladder
