On Sunday, because we’d been making good progress, we took a day off. We got to sleep in and enjoy Sunday brunch. In the afternoon, Tyr, Natalie, and I set off for Castle Rock. This is the highest nearby point, and along the longest recreational hike that isn’t out to LDB and back.
Beneath Castle Rock is also a large hill where the glacier flows off land into the ice shelf. Here’s the best place around for downhill skiing, or, in a pinch, sledding on a galley tray.
Off we go!
Castle Rock expedition
Tyr brings skis
And tries to shoot me with them. I survived
The Apple (shelter)
Natalie runs to check it out
Me
Having just finished my "Natalie's in the apple" dance
Rock sighted
Tyr and Castle Rock
Burgers, burgers, burgers
Natalie was motivated to go fast, so as to return in time for Burger Bar
Castle Rock
Natalie, snow, clouds, and a bit of rock
Stopping to Pose I
Stopping to Pose II
Coming soon
I can hardly wait
Climbing
Goatlike, Tyr prances up the hill
And has time to pose majestically
"What, you guys don't just leap up mountains?"
Summiting
Obligatory LDB shot
From summit of Castle Rock
The one time I was above Tyr
When he explored downwards from the summit
Sledding down the hill
Natalie gets some good speed
And zooms past where I wiped out
Tyr finally gets to take advantage of the skis he lugged along
Skiing
Passing
The Kress
A giant transport, and "successor" to Ivan the Terra Bus. Smooth, roomy, quiet ride. Very slow
Posing with the Kress
On the way back into town
