Yesterday Juan and Natalie glued the second layer of the side scoop, liquid nitrogen filling of the cryostat started, and the mirrors were mounted. There was also the England vs. USA match in the World Cup, which distracted a large portion of the team. Especially when the English keeper let in a terrible goal.
In the early evening Tristan gave us a slow motion disco performance, for the sake of the day’s timelapse video.
- The liquid nitrogen fill started. In three days the cryostat will be cold enough to add liquid helium
- The gas escaping was really loud
- With the base layer of the scoop set, further gluing can proceed off of the gondola
- The next layer is test fit, and a scheme to hold the tubes is devised
- Tony helps. Tony is helpful
- The triangles are glued first, and weighted down/tied together.
- Good time for a World Cup break. (World Cup! Woo!)
- The mirror lifting out of its crate
- Nick helps guide the mirror into place
- Mark works on the fine alignment to get the bolts in place
- Matt is a qualified fork driver. He knows what all the buttons do
- Tristan starts his slow motion dance
- He holds the final pose for a good long time
- Mark is the Man in the Mirror
- We had a lot of fun playing with lasers and fiddling with actuators, trying to align the mirrors
- The complete first layer of the scoop, and Star of David support structure
